Why didn’t James just apparate with Harry and Lily when he realized they were under attack?
You know…instead of wandlessly running down the stairs?
Like, did they not have a plan?
(( OOC: Pretty sure there was something preventing them from apparating. Otherwise they both could have just hopped out of there. Maybe the charms placed on the house to prevent them from being found also prevented anyone from escaping.
Anyone know more about this? ))
Many wizarding homes, we are told in the HBP book, have some sort of protection to stop people Apparating in and out. Not to mention it’s considered extremely rude to try. (Not that Voldemort would have cared much about manners there.)
I can fully believe that this was one of the protections on the Potter home, which is why Lily didn’t Apparate out either when James told her to run for it… and why Voldemort didn’t just Apparate into the house and start blasting. He had to arrive a little way away and walk.
My issue is that there was no escape plan. I understand not being able to apparate in, but what about getting out in the even of an emergency.
It’s like building a fireproof house without a door.
GREAT! The house won’t burn down but it’s gonna get hot and you can’t leave!
(( OOC: MAYBE IT’S JUST A REALLY BIG PLOT-HOLE, DID YOU EVER THINK OF THAT ANDY!? XD ))
Andy: I HAVE BEEN AND ITS BOTHERING ME!!!!!!! XD IM SORRY I JUST HAVE A LOT OF QUESTIONS
(( OOC: STOP THINKING! JUST LET IT HAPPEN!!!! 😉 Hehehehe. ))
Andy: *sobs in french*
(( OOC: But really though, this has always driven me crazy. We gotta figure something out asap. Put your thinking caps on kids. ))
Maybe they did have an exit strategy, however it wasn’t 100% fleshed out and they were so caught off guard by the fact that Voldemort was /actually there/ that they completely forgot it and did what came instinctually.
Andy: This is the only answer I will accept
(( OOC: Maybe neither of them passed their tests and they didn’t want to break the law. ))
((OOC: I gotchu guys.
The reason they couldn’t Apparate is straight up because neither of them had their wands. You cannot Apparate without a wand, unless you are extremely powerful e.g. Voldie/Dumbledore.
They were too trusting of the Fidelius (feckin Peter), and let their guards down, and were completely blindsided by Voldie blasting down their door.
Evidence? In DH, Harry has a vision while they are escaping Nagini in Godric’s Hollow. We see the night Lily and James were killed through Voldie’s eyes.“…the tall black-haired man in his glasses, making puffs
of colored smoke erupt from his wand for the amusement of the small
black-haired boy..,.A door opened and the mother entered, saying words he could not
hear, her long dark-red hair falling over her face. Now the father scooped
up the son and handed him to the mother. He threw his wand down
upon the sofa and stretched, yawning…The gate creaked a little as he pushed it open, but James Potter did
not hear. His white hand pulled out the wand beneath his cloak and
pointed it at the door, which burst open.
He was over the threshold as James came sprinting into the hall.Assuming the house has a pretty standard British layout, the living room and hall would not have been particularly far apart. James acts instinctively, throwing himself between Lily/Harry and Voldie without stopping to pick up his wand. Seeing as he literally handed over Harry seconds ago, Lily is still close by. James knows he can only be a bump in the road a this point and doesn’t have time to turn back to the sofa and get his wand. Voldie is right. there. There is literally no time. James doesn’t know that Voldie doesn’t plan to kill Lily outright.
It
was easy, too easy, he had not even picked up his wand… .“Lily, take Harry and go! It’s him! Go! Run! I’ll hold him off!”
….She had no wand upon her either… . How
stupid they were, and how trusting, thinking that their safety lay in
friends, that weapons could be discarded even for moments… .I assume if they’d had their wands, they would have been able to Apparate out because the Fidelius was already broken, and although there are anti-Apparitiion jinxes on residences (as Andy mentioned), it’s only for unwanted Apparitions, so the actual residents/family/friends etc. would probably be able to Apparate in/out. Also, If either one of them had had their wand, they could have side-alonged.
So, yeah. They were too trusting. They had been in hiding for some time already and become complacent. They didn’t have their wands.))
Andy: IT HAS BEEN SOLVED! tHANK YOU MEG
(( OOC: nerd ))
((OOC: Trust Meg to know all the tiny details of the most soul-crushing part of the entire series.))
